Performance Assessment of an Industrial Waste Heat Boiler Using Minimum Variance Control

Yul Y. Nazaruddin, Minggir W. Wibowo

Abstract

This paper presents an approach to monitor and assess the performance of an industrial waste heat boiler currently operated in a fertilizer plant in Gresik, West Java, Indonesia. An alternative method is by comparing the current control quality with particular standards. Using the experimental data collected from the closed-loop control it is possible to conduct the process controller assessment using Minimum Variance Control (MVC) as a benchmark. For performance assessment of the boiler, several input-output data have been recorded using a sampling time of 1 minute with the number of total data is
3000. The results show that for SISO system the performance index is equal to 0.026, whereas for SIMO system with the input BFW to superheater with the output steam temperature and steam flow, index performance equal is to 0.036.
