State of the Art Structural Fatigue Analyzer for the Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV)

Manju Nanda

Abstract

The Unmanned Air Vehicles refer to the pilotless aircraft which are extensively used for military and civilian applications. The extensive activities carried out by UAV’s make the UAV structures prone to fatigue leading to cracks and structural damage. The reduction in maintenance costs and the enhanced service life can be achieved by Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) which ensures safe and reliable operation. This paper discusses about the state of the art enhanced Fatigue Meter by CSIR_NAL which can aid in structural fatigue analysis of the UAV. The proposed system senses the vertical ‘g’ variations due to load cycles experienced by the vehicle during flight, computes the ‘g’-crossings and logs the computed data in the memory along with time stamp. Post flight, these data help the maintenance personnel in regenerating the flight profile and thereby indicates fatigue set in the aircraft structure. Thus the system provides information that is used in estimating the remaining life of the aircraft.
